Observation Is Key

Yogi said it best..."You can observe a lot by watching!"

I happen to be on a little vacation this week with my wife in Hawaii. She likes to shop. I like to do what Sam Walton, Wal-Mart's founder called, "Walk the floor".

For Mr. Walton, that term meant to go out into the store and see first-hand what was going on.

For me, it means walking around while my wife's shopping and watching what is going on with the entrepreneurs in their stores. I am always fascinated with what I learn.

Waikiki Beach is a mecca for tourists from the mainland and Asian countries as well so it becomes a quick blend of culture and ideas. We arrived the day after the 3 foot Tsunami hit and already the vendors were out selling their new t-shirts promoting, "I survived the Tsunami of 2010". I suspect they might have sold more had the wave been a little bigger and generated more excitement but on the other hand had it been too big the market would not have survived. That is the essence of an entrepreneurs bet. You must always be looking for the sweet spot.

Walking around the international market I was attracted by the center booth right on the street in the prime spot. It was manned by two women and one guy. All three attractive and selling a spinning trinket from their booth for more than it's worth but of course all is relative. My attraction to the booth was not so much the product, but the blend of languages coming from the three sales people and the shoppers. I stopped and watched.

After a few minutes the guy observed me observing them and walked over to my spot asking if I liked the spinning wheels. Since I was the only WASP around, he spoke to me in English in a smiling friendly manner. I smiled and told him I wasn't a buyer, but I had stopped because I was interested in all of the languages they were speaking as shoppers went by.

"You have to, " he replied, now suspicious. I must also not be very bright if I hadn't realized that.

"How many languages do you speak?" I asked.

"Six... fluently" he told me and then quickly asked with interest, "How many do you speak?"

"One," I told him, also quickly adding..."and not very well."

He shrugged..."Its just part of what I have to do to be successful out here on the street" he said turning to catch the next prospect who had walked up to the kiosk... "And work hard" he added turning back to me as though he had left something unfinished. "You always have to work hard if you are going to be successful."

And with that he had turned away, seemingly knowing he had passed on his lesson for the day... and he had.

He and his two cohorts had a valuable talent that they could speak in multiple languages and more importantly sell in them. However, even though I had also offered praise and had recognized his talent over mine, he acknowledged the secret ingredient we must all remember no matter our talent. You have to work hard if you are going to be successful. Not everyone does... and so not everyone is... but that is the lesson and the opportunity.

To Your Success,
J.W. Dicks
