The Summer “Fun Sucker”

June means the start of summer and the holidays of Memorial Day and the 4th of July over long weekends. Somewhere between the first of June and the end of August many people take a week or two off for vacation, and then it’s back to school.

The good news about these holiday breaks is that they are time to spend with friends and family with a little relaxation as well.

The bad news to the summer holidays is that it is easy to lose focus on your business, and if you aren’t careful, you’ll wake up in September and have lost marketing momentum that is sometimes hard to get back up to speed fast enough.

While I hate to be called the summer “Fun Sucker,” I feel it’s my duty to point out the error that lost focus can bring -- particularly in a year where many of us are fighting back from the economic slump.

The answer to the balancing act between more work vs. more play comes in the form of planning. If you take the time to plan your summer from both a work and play standpoint, you can do both. Failure to make a plan, however, may very well result in a dismal fall income report because there is nothing new in the business pipeline, and you can’t let that happen. While planning may seem like common sense, that doesn’t mean we always pay attention. That is why I am trying to be that little voice in your ear that you sometimes hear when you don’t really want to pay any attention at all.

So let’s bring focus to a couple of things. A belated Memorial Day thanks to our men and women in uniform who go to the war and keep it from coming here. Happy 4th of July birthday to our country that continues to give us independence and affords us the opportunity to do well or mess up, as we see fit. And finally, thanks for the summer when we can all take a little break to be with our kids and sweethearts and get ready for the next grade we get when school and work open for new action in the fall.

Enjoy the ideas from our experts that follow!

To Your Success,
